Journalist, painter, calligrapher.

He was born in 1928 in the Göçük Village of Tarsus. He started his journalism career as a painter-caligrapher in Yeni Sabah newspaper in 1954. He printed Atatürk's 100th birthday posters. The artist was drawing portraits of Atatürk, which were published in newspapers on 10th of November every year. The portrait of Atatürk which he drew on the occasion of the Atatürk Commemoration Day 10th of November while working for the Milliyet newspaper in 1969 was the most permanent of his works until that day.

Ethem Çalışkan is also the illustrator of the world's largest portrait of ATATÜRK, created with 6000 people in Ankara, Anıtkabir. He visited our Galleria Ear Nose and Throat Center on May 28, 2016 and was kind enough to share his memories and experiences with our team.

CO2 Laser

One of the laser systems frequently used in the field of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT - Ear Nose Throat) is the CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser. We use it extensively in our clinic, especially in the surgery of vocal cord diseases (nodules, polyps, warts, cancer, etc.) or diseases of the mouth and pharynx such as soft palate, uvula, tonsils and tongue (snoring and sleep apnea, tonsil and cancer surgery, etc.). The superiority of laser surgery is that it causes very little bleeding during the surgery and causes less damage to the surrounding tissues. Recovery time after surgery is faster and less painful. For this reason, the hospitalization period of patients is shortened and they return to their daily lives quickly.

We can say that Rhinolight-UV Light Therapy, which has been successfully applied in recent years, has created a great excitement in the treatment of allergic rhinitis. We observe that the quality of life of our patients has become much better after two or three applications, thanks to the efficiency of Rhinolight Light Therapy, which we have started to apply in our center.

Rhinolight Light Therapy is only applied to patients with diagnosed allergic rhinitis. Patients whose allergic rhinitis complaints cannot be controlled by drugs used alone or in combination (such as antihistamine tablets or syrups, nasal sprays containing steroids), allergy rhinitis patients for whom it is inconvenient to use drugs (such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, active sports, liver or kidney failures), patients whose medications may interact with anti-allergic drugs due to another disease, patients who do not prefer to use long-term medication, patients who want support in the allergy treatment they are applying, and patients who want support for the allergy treatment they are applying are candidates for Rhinolight treatment.

Rhinolight is a type of visible light that contains high-intensity, a certain proportion of ultraviolet A and B rays. The ultraviolet light shows its effect by preventing the immune system response, which occurs as a result of the nose encountering the allergen, from overdoing it. We would like to state that this form of treatment is a clinically tested and approved treatment method.

The effects of Rhinolight light therapy are fast and long-lasting. It provides a high rate of improvement in the complaints of allergic rhinitis patients. Recovery periods may vary from person to person. Depending on the level of complaints, it may be necessary to repeat the treatment courses several times a year. Although it can be applied to all age groups, it can be applied to patients under the age of 14 in a controlled manner. Rhinolight Light Therapy can be used alone or in combination with drugs such as antihistamines and/or steroids in the treatment of allergic rhinitis. In seasonal rhinitis (hay fever), we make a total of 6 applications for two weeks, 3 times a week, and 8 applications in total, 3 times in the first week and once a week in all-year-long allergic rhinitis.

The application is in the form of applying the visible light for 2-3 minutes with a special hand apparatus advanced into the nose. Since the patient does not feel any pain during the application, there is no need for any anesthesia. The only side effect that can be seen rarely is dryness and crusting in the nose, and we use moisturizing creams to relieve this complaint. After the first one or two applications, a temporary increase in allergic complaints can be seen, which is an expected response. The reduction in the patient's complaints due to allergies usually starts after a few applications and becomes evident in the second week.

Low Level Laser Therapy for Tinnitus

This form of treatment, also called LLLT (Low Level Laser Therapy / LLLT) or Soft Laser, is the process of activating the mechanisms that provide healing in cells and tissues by sending beams with a certain dose, high intensity, a single wavelength and the same frequency to the targeted area.

LLLT shortens the healing time in damaged tissues by 30-40%, and tissues that heal under the influence of laser are more robust and stronger than tissues that heal themselves. LLLT helps to regenerate damaged structures by stimulating hearing-related hair cells and nerve endings on the region known as cochlea in the inner ear. At the same time, electro-magnetic waves applied to the head area with laser waves during the procedure, as well as the treatment of inner ear tinnitus, also help the treatment of Tinnutus caused by muscle, nerve compression and neck recovery. The laser beam cannot reach any place other than the snail in the inner ear, so it is definitely not possible to damage other tissues, especially the brain. Therefore, it is quite safe. In the devices used in LLLT, the dose of the laser beam and the frequency of the electromagnetic waves have been adjusted and produced in a way that will not harm human health. The procedure is completely painless. It is applied on an outpatient basis, no anesthesia or drug use is required. It is a very safe procedure and does not have the potential for side effects.

Approximately 50-60% of patients undergoing LLLT achieve varying degrees of positive results. LLLT is applied to patients in a total of 12 sessions. It is applied as 3 sessions in the first week and once a week in the following weeks. The total duration of treatment is 2-2.5 months. During the sessions, laser and electromagnetic waves are applied simultaneously. Laser beams will be given through the external ear canal and in addition to this, over the bone behind the ear in some sessions. During the application, no pain or ache is felt, and no significant side effects are observed. Electro-magnetic waves are applied to three predetermined areas on the head at the same time. If the patient has a complaint of ringing in both ears, the laser head can be changed and cure can be applied in two sessions of 15 minutes each.

Laser treatment is not recommended for pregnant women, epilepsy patients and patients with a pacemaker.
There is no guarantee that laser therapy will completely cure tinnitus.
Laser therapy is one of the methods used in order to be beneficial to the patient, as well as the tools and methods used in the treatment of tinnitus (tinnitus drugs, tinnitus retraining therapy, biofeedback, etc.). It is not possible to predict which treatment method will be beneficial to the patient.

During your treatment:

Drink at least 1.5 liters of water after each session.
Do not smoke, do not drink alcohol, do not drink coffee.
Avoid salt.
Do not eat excessively fatty and spicy red meat.
Avoid chocolate and nectared desserts.
Do not consume acidic drinks such as cola and soda.
Do not listen to loud music.
If you work in a noisy environment, be sure to use earphones or earplugs.
Avoid stress as much as possible.
Do sports regularly (such as walking) in a way that does not tire you.

Snoring and Breath-Holding During Sleep Disease

Snoring is a social and medical problem that seriously affects harmony and happiness in the family. Apnea, or sleep apnea, is a serious clinical condition that affects all organ systems, leaving the person without oxygen. Patients with sleep apnea are more likely to develop diabetes, asthma, stroke, heart and blood pressure diseases. Even sudden death in sleep, albeit rare, may occur.

If a person's breathing has stopped for 5 or more times in a 1-hour sleep period, at least 10 seconds each time, it is possible to talk about sleep apnea in that person. Apnea can be seen in diseases affecting the respiratory center in the brain, as well as in cases of obstruction that prevents the passage of air in the upper respiratory tract (nasal bone curvature, sagging-growth of the soft palate and uvula, large tonsils-nasal flesh, backward escape of the tongue root, etc.) as the collapsed closure of air ways. In the case of sleep apnea, although breathing stops, the effort to breathe again continues, and the increased carbon dioxide rate in the blood stimulates the brain, causing a noisy breathing again, and this cycle continues throughout the entire sleep.

Excess weight, obesity, short neck, smoking, alcohol, allergy-depression drugs and extreme fatigue are the leading causes that increase apnea and snoring. One of the gold standards in the diagnosis and treatment of snoring and/or apnea is the “sleep test/polysomnography” test. The test is based on the measurement of brain waves, eye movements, airflow from the mouth and nose, snoring, heart rate, leg movements and oxygen levels during sleep. For this test, the patients are taken to the sleeping room and hospitalized. During the test, the signals received with cables connected to various parts of the body are transferred to the host computer outside the room, either wired or wirelessly. By examining these records taken until the morning, the severity of the disease is revealed by examining many parameters such as how many times and for how long breathing stops during sleep, how much blood oxygen level drops during apnea, and whether or not to fall into a deep sleep, and it is decided which way to be preferred in the treatment.

Treatment varies according to the severity of the disease. The surgical and non-surgical methods applied are specific for each patient. Although many methods are used in surgery, the main purpose is to remove the obstructing anatomical structure and to prevent inward collapse of the airway. For this purpose, operations for the nose, tonsils, uvula, tongue root, soft palate and chin are performed.

Among non-surgical methods, devices that deliver positive pressure air to the airway known as PAP with the help of a mouth and/or nose mask take the first place. The biggest disadvantage of this method, which has a success rate of up to 95-100 percent, is low patient compliance. Because nearly half of the patients cannot tolerate sleeping with a mask and therefore the positive pressure applied.

Attention to Thyroid Nodules

Thyroid nodules are abnormal lumps or masses of different structures and sizes that occur within the thyroid tissue. Most of them are harmless and benign. Sometimes they cannot be seen from the outside because they do not reach a sufficient size. Although it is more common in women, cancer is more common in men. Most nodules are asymptomatic, ie silent.

5-15 percent of them should be examined because they carry a cancer risk. Some of the nodules may cause a clinical condition called “hyperthyroidism” by working excessively, except for cancer, or they may enlarge and press on the trachea. Although nodules are generally harmless, they should be taken seriously and should be examined by patients because of the risks they carry.

Nodules are one of the most common thyroid gland diseases. Iodine deficiency in drinking water and the food we take has an important effect on the formation of the disease. Thyroid gland inflammation and ionizing radiation can be counted among other causes. It is usually difficult to detect unless it is large enough. However, due to the widespread use of thyroid ultrasound today, very small ones can be detected even in the very early period.

Symptoms of thyroid nodules:
Swelling and/or occasional pain in the neck (fast growing, larger than 4 cm, single, painful and hard nodules are more likely to be cancer. Patients who previously received radiotherapy for diseases such as bone marrow transplant, head and neck cancers, who has a family history of thyroid cancer, who are under the age of 20 or over the age of 70 who have a history of neck nodules accompanied by enlargement of lymph nodes larger than 1 cm are in the high-risk group).

Among the diagnostic methods, the patient's history and a careful neck examination are very important, but with biochemistry (such as free t3-t4 in the blood, tsh, anti-tg or anti-tpo) and radiological diagnostic methods (such as usg, mr, ct, pet, scintigraphy), we can accurately determine the diagnosis and the path to be followed.
Ultrasound (USG) is a very fast and simple diagnostic tool. If the risk of the nodule being cancerous is detected by USG, a sample can be taken from the nodule for examination with “fine needle biopsy/IB” (collecting a cell sample from the swelling in the neck with the help of USG with the help of a special injector). Those with cystic internal structures are less likely to have cancerous tissue. If the nodule is larger than 1 cm or the nodule is larger than 5 mm and has risk factors, IB should be performed.

Thyroid scintigraphy using special radioactive materials shows us whether the nodule is cold, hot or warm according to its hormone production capacity. This is extremely important because cold nodules have a greater risk of becoming cancer (5-10%).

Treatment methods:
According to the results of fine needle aspiration biopsy, surgery is the gold standard in most of the nodules that cause cancer or cancer suspicion. In the operation, some or all of the thyroid tissue is removed depending on the condition of the case, and sometimes it may be necessary to clean the lymph nodes in the neck due to spread to the lymph nodes.

Fine-needle biopsy is generally not needed because hot nodules have less risk of becoming cancerous. If the hot nodule is single and less than 2 cm, it can be treated only with radioactive iodine without the need for surgery. If the hot nodule is larger than 2 cm and/or more than one, surgery is considered instead of iodine treatment.
Fine needle biopsy may not always give accurate results. For this reason, all nodules with a good IB result are not left alone and USG is performed at regular intervals by being closely followed, and it is necessary to apply IB again to nodules that have grown by 20-25 percent compared to the previous one.

USEFUL APPLICATIONS

Taking 2 glasses of water 30 minutes before meals, 1 glass of water after 60 minutes, and the desired amount of water in between is a very relaxing practice.
The vegetable juice you prepare by mixing red beet, white cabbage, red apple and apple cider vinegar (1 teaspoon) is very useful.

After Ear Calcification-Stapedotomy (Otosclerosis Surgery)

Issues you should pay attention to after stapedotomy (Otosclerosis Surgery):

On the day of the surgery, watery and soft foods are recommended after the surgery. Feeding is started three hours after the operation. From the next day of the surgery, you can return to your normal eating habits. However, in order not to be constipated, plenty of water and high-fiber foods are recommended.
There may be mild pain after surgery. In this case, you can use the painkillers prescribed to you.
It is normal to have slight soiling and pinking in the postoperative dressing. You should contact your doctor in case of persistent bleeding and excessive soiling of the dressing.
In cases of intense and foul-smelling discharge from the ear after the surgery, increasing ringing, weakness and asymmetry in facial movements, severe dizziness and fever, you should call your doctor without wasting time.
There may be a feeling of dizziness in the early postoperative period. The reason for this is the technical intervention in the inner ear during the operation.
It is recommended to sleep on a high pillow for the first week.
It is normal to have mild dizziness and a feeling of fullness in the ear after surgery. It will take some time for your hearing to fully recover. This period is related to the complete healing of the operation area.
Do not blow your nose vigorously for one month after surgery. Do not cover your mouth and nose while sneezing. Sneeze with your mouth open.
The tampon placed in your ear after surgery is removed within 1-2 weeks. No pain is felt during tampon removal.
You will need to use ear drops after the tampons in the ear are removed.
You can take a bath down your neck two days after the surgery. However, you should not allow water to get into your ear and dressing. It's best if you wash with someone's help.
The process of returning to social life, working life or school after surgery is related to the patient's well-being. When you feel good, you can return to your normal life. However, we generally recommend that you rest for one or two weeks.
Heavy sports and physical activity should be avoided for 3 months after surgery.
You will need to protect your ear from water for 2 months after surgery. During this period, swimming and water sports are also inconvenient.
Do not lift anything heavier than 5 kg during the first month after the surgery.
It is inconvenient to travel by plane for 1 month after the surgery.
It is not possible to dive for life after the surgery.
Normal delivery is not recommended for life for female patients after the surgery, cesarean delivery should be preferred.
After the surgery, it is inconvenient to do sports such as weightlifting and heavy lifting for bodybuilding purposes, and jobs that require heavy lifting for life.
It is inconvenient to drive for two weeks.
It is comvenient to use glasses and lenses after the surgery.
Tobacco products should not be consumed for one month after the surgery.

Otovent Maneuver: In this maneuver, a balloon whose mouthpiece fits into the nostrils is used. You can use a hollow cylinder, such as a ballpoint pen, as a mouthpiece. Gently insert a mouthpiece balloon into one nostril, close the other, and try to inflate the balloon by introducing air. Repeat the same process with the other nostril.
Move your chin left and right, back and forth.
You can apply a warm compress on the ear.
Chewing gum is an exercise that can be beneficial because it causes frequent swallowing.
When you do the above-mentioned exercises, a "pit" sound from the ear, improvement of fullness indicates that the Eustachian tube is working.

-Air travel, scuba or free diving below 3 meters are not recommended if you have an upper respiratory tract infection such as a cold or flu.
-During flight, the main problem occurs when the plane begins to descend. So when the descent starts, chew gum, eat something or drink water (swallowing motion).
-If you travel frequently by plane and you have problems with your ears, you can use special earplugs that are either sold specifically for flight comfort or made by companies that sell hearing aids by molding your external ear canal.
-In chronic eustachian dysfunctions, if no results can be obtained from drug treatment, ear tube or eustachian tube opening/balloon tuboplasty surgery can be applied to ventilate the middle ear.

Things to Follow in the Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis

Ventilate your home often. Ventilation should not be done in the morning.
In dry air, especially when the humidity is below 50 percent, none of the house dust mites can survive. For this reason, steam machines should never be used to humidify the environment.
In winter, the indoor temperature should be around 20-22 degrees.
House dust mites are found in high rates in household items such as beds, pillows, quilts, carpets, thick fabric curtains and furniture that can easily hold dust on them (it is not dust that causes allergies, but microscopic creatures called mites settled in the dust). The bedding, pillow and quilt used should not be wool, goose feathers or bird feathers, and should be covered with special mite-proof medical covers if possible. Bed linen, pillowcases, duvet covers should be washed at least once a week in water with a temperature above 65 degrees.
Carpets and rugs should not be used as much as possible. The ideal floor is hardwood, marley and vinlex exhibits. If the carpet is to be used, leaving the carpet in the sun for 3 hours is a simple and economical method that will kill the mites, especially in hot climates.

In windy weather, if it is not necessary to go out, indoor areas should be preferred for sports activities.
A hat with a visor should be worn, goggles should be worn, and long-sleeved and legged clothing should be worn. These clothes should be changed upon entering the house and should not be taken off in the bedroom.
Take a shower with plenty of water or wash the hair and face with plenty of water. After bathing, the bathroom should be ventilated to remove moisture. Laundry should be dried indoors during the pollen season.

In 2008, we took part in a social responsibility project for the first time by conducting a hearing screening of Çukurova State Symphony Orchestra employees.

Aesthetic Nose Surgery / Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, which is the most preferred operation among aesthetic surgeries, is an operation performed to obtain a beautiful nose that is compatible with the face and liked by the person himself/herself and his/her surroundings. In recent years, the aim of rhinoplasty is to obtain a natural-looking nose with full nasal functions.

In general, the techniques used in rhinoplasty are divided into two as open technique or closed technique surgery.

The open technique is performed by combining a small incision made in the lower part of the nostrils with the incisions inside the nose. In the closed technique, no incision is made outside, but surgery is performed with incisions made through the nose. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages, but the most important disadvantage of the open technique is the risk of the incision being made in the region seen from the outside. Again, in the open technique, the swelling of the nasal tip skin lasts longer than the closed method.

Significant changes and new technologies have become popular in rhinoplasty surgeries in recent years. One of them is bone processing with the pieza method. In this method, bone is cut with ultrasonic sound waves. Since it does not damage the soft tissues, there is less bruising and swelling.

There are various factors that affect the outcome of rhinoplasty surgeries, some of them are related to the structural features of the patient, and some of them are related to the surgical method applied. Factors such as the thickness of the patient's skin, any previous intervention to the nose area, smoking, etc. affect the result.

Liquid foods (such as milk, compote juice, fruit juice, soup) can be started 4 hours after the operation.
Food should be given little by little. Overloading the stomach suddenly can cause nausea and vomiting. On the second day, you can switch to normal foods.
After the first day, normal daily activities can be done easily.
The patient does not feel the presence of the tube inserted in his ear, does not feel discomfort from it, and continues his daily life as it is. Running, jumping, moving does not cause any damage to the tube or dislodge it.
The most important point to be considered is not to get water in the ear when entering the sea, pool or bath until the tube falls off.
The ear should be plugged with vaseline cotton or earplugs and bathed.
Ear cleaning should never be done with cotton litter.
Under normal conditions, a slight bloody discharge may occur in the first 1-2 days due to the surgical procedure, this is natural. Dense, yellow-green colored and foul-smelling discharge that occurs later is a sign of inflammation. You should consult your doctor without delay.

You may need to massage your nose after the nose mold is removed. How to do the massage will be explained to you by your doctor.
You may have difficulty in breathing through the nose due to the tampons placed in the nose. You will be told by your doctor after how many days the tampons will be removed.
Some pink or red discharge may come from your nose. These are expected and non-significant leaks. However, if you have continuous and abundant blood coming from your nose or nasal passage, you should definitely call your doctor.
You can change the gauze pads placed on the tip of the nose as they become dirty.
Only use the drugs your doctor gave you. Do not use drugs with blood thinners such as aspirin.
Prefer liquid foods on the first day and soft and easily chewable foods on the following days. Do not use straws while drinking liquid foods.
Try to keep your head upright as much as possible throughout the day. Take care to use at least two pillows while sleeping. Keeping your head in an upright position will help reduce the edema that may occur on your face after surgery.

In the same year, he did his 19-month compulsory service in Afyonkarahisar. Between 1989-1995, he received specialization training in the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation at CUTF. In this process, he participated in ECMO and liver transplantation clinical studies at the University of Milan in 1993. After completing his specialization training, he worked as a specialist in the public sector until his retirement in 2013. He retired after April 2013 and started working at Galleria ENT Center.

Born in Adana in 1967, Op.Dr. R. Hakan Yurdakul started primary school at the age of five because of his impatient temperament. He spent his childhood in the streets of Tepebağ Neighborhood, one of the oldest residential areas of Adana. He graduated from Gazipaşa Primary School, Tepebağ Secondary School and Adana Industrial Vocational High School Electronics Department.

While thinking, "What was I doing in a vocational high school?", he decided to enroll in Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine in 1983. He graduated as the "top scoring student" in 1989. He received his "Otorhinolaryngology Specialization" from the same faculty in 1994. Since then, he has served in various government positions (Çukurova University Medico-Social Unit, KKK Hatay/İzmir Military Hospital, Adana Karşıyaka State Hospital, Adana Çukurova State Hospital). Due to his interest in history, he collects historical papers and documents (ephemera).

In addition to his articles on history published in various magazines, newspapers and websites, he contributed as a guest writer in a book that presents sections from the ancient life of Adana. He also organized various exhibitions featuring the original "Mourning Newspapers" of the period, which were published between November 10-26, 1938. Hiking, camping, horseback riding and travel are among his main interests. Having publications in many national and international journals, Dr. Yurdakul is still working as an ENT Specialist at Adana Private Galleria ENT Center as a founding partner.

After graduating from Ankara Çankaya Primary School, Ankara Namık Kemal Secondary School and Ankara Atatürk High School, respectively, he graduated from Gazi University Faculty of Medicine in 1985 and completed his education. After graduation, he completed his compulsory service by working as a Practitioner for 2 years, first in İzmir Karşıyaka State Hospital and then in Ankara Numune Hospital Emergency Service. Married to Ms. Tijen in 1986, Dr. Türeli came to Adana in 1987 to start his specialization in Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Otorhinolaryngology. After completing his specialization in 1992, he completed his military service at Izmir Military Hospital and immediately started to work as an ENT Specialist at Adana State Hospital. In 1993, he joined Op. Dr. Ahmet Payas and Op. Dr. İ. Şeref Doruk and continued his career at Sevgi Medical Center. In the same year, his daughter Selen was born, and in 2000 his son Tunç was born. In 2007, together with 7 partners, they established Adana Galleria ENT Center, which is Turkey's largest and most equipped otolaryngology center in its field. Dr. Türeli continues his professional life in the same center by taking on administrative duties.

Dr. Türeli's hobbies have always had an important place in his life. He started playing the guitar in high school, and then continued this hobby as the guitarist of the "19 Stethoscope" music group at university. He still contributes to the Galleria ENT Center Spring Parties with his music and continues this hobby with his wife, Ms. Tijen. Dr. Türeli is also a motorcycle, underwater sports and sailing enthusiast. He continues actively in these sports, where he has completed various trainings. Sports cars and electronics are also among his top interests. Hobbies continue to be an integral part of his life.

He graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1992 and started his specialization in Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ear Nose and Throat. Assoc. Prof. Akbaş, who became an Ear Nose and Throat Specialist in 1996, worked as a lecturer in Ankara University Faculty of Medicine ENT Department until 2000. He served as Associate Professor in Mersin University Faculty of Medicine ENT Department in 2005 and as Clinical Chief at Adana Numune Training and Research Hospital until 2008.

He was an observer in the Methodist Hospital Head and Neck Surgery Department for voice rehabilitation and surgical treatment of head and neck cancers after total laryngectomy for 2 months, and for facial plastic surgery at Arkansas University School of Medicine ENT Head and Neck Surgery Facial Plastic Surgery Department for 3 months. He also attended the temporal bone and endoscopic sinus surgery cadaver dissection course at Georgia Ear Institute.

He has a total of 65 published publications, 24 in Turkey and 41 abroad. His main areas of interest are ear diseases, head and neck cancer treatment. He is married and has two sons.

He continues his professional life as Chief Physician at Galleria ENT Center, of which he is one of the founding partners.

Prof. Dr. L. Barlas AYDOĞAN

Born in 1965 in Muğla, Prof. Dr. L. Barlas Aydoğan graduated from Bornova Anatolian High School in 1983. After graduating from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1990, he specialized in the Department of Ear Nose and Throat at Çukurova University between 1990-1997. In this process, he conducted scientific studies at the University of Pittsburgh ENT Clinic in the United States between 1992-1994.
After completing his military service at Çiğli 2nd Main Jet Base between 1998 and 2000, Dr. Aydoğan started working at Çukurova University again. He became an Associate Professor in 2002 and was appointed a professor at the same faculty in 2007.
He is a member of Turkish ENT Society, Head and Neck Surgery Society, Pediatric ENT Society, American Academy of Otolaryngology Head Neck Surgery, Çukurova ENT Society, Turkish Rhinology Society and Halil Avcı Foundation for the Hearing Impaired. Prof. Dr. Aydoğan, who has a total of 66 published publications, 40 in the country and 26 abroad, has also been included in the chapters of 6 books. He has two books titled "Rhinosinusitis Diagnosis and Treatment Guide" and "Algorithmic Approach to Ear, Nose and Throat, from Symptom to Diagnosis, from Diagnosis to Treatment", which he edited.

His main areas of interest are rhinology, aesthetic nose surgery, head and neck cancer treatment. He is married and has one daughter. His hobbies include swimming, playing tennis, skiing and reading. Leaving Çukurova University in February 2011 with the enactment of the full-time law, Prof. Dr. Aydoğan continues his professional life at the Private Galleria ENT Center in Adana.

Prof. Dr. Levent SOYLU

Born in Adana in 1958, Dr. Levent Soylu graduated from Tarsus American College in 1976. He graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1982 with his wife Merih and went to Mardin for 2 years to do compulsory service. In 1984, their first daughter İpek was born. Levent Soylu, who worked as a general practitioner in Saudi Arabia for 2 years between 1984-86, completed his 2-month paid military service and started his specialization in Çukurova University, Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases in 1986. After receiving his specialization in 1990, he started to work as an Assistant Professor at the same faculty in 1991.

Meanwhile, their twin daughters, Gülru and Gülfem, were born in 1989. He worked with Dr. Jatin Shah on head and neck cancers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute for 6 months in 1991-92 and became Associate Professor in 1994. Soylu, who worked on head and neck cancer surgery and endoscopic sinus surgery at Johns Hopkins University for 1 year in 1997-98, spent one month at the University of Pennsylvania as an observer. He was appointed as a professor at the same faculty in 1999. Prof. Dr. Soylu, who was the Head of Çukurova University ENT Department between 2003-2008, also served as the President of Çukurova ENT Association between 2002-2006.

Between 2005-2009, he served on the Turkish ENT-BBC Association Competency Board. Having a total of 96 published publications, 69 in Turkey and 27 abroad, Prof. Dr. Soylu also has a published book called “Practical Pediatric Otolaryngology” and a book called “Otitis Media with Effusion” that he edited. His main areas of interest are head and neck cancers, thyroid surgery and endoscopic sinus surgery.
Prof. Dr. Soylu, whose hobbies are basketball and photography, played basketball in Tarsus Schweppes and Çukurova Sanayi teams until the 6th grade while studying at the medical school. Prof. Dr. Soylu, who retired from Çukurova University in February 2011 with the enactment of the full-time law, continues his professional life at the Private Galleria ENT Center in Adana.

Vertigo

Vertigo is the feeling that you or the objects around you are spinning like a top. Although it is often described as dizziness, not every feeling of dizziness means vertigo. Complaints such as unsteadiness, wobble, feeling of drunkenness, drowsiness or stepping into the void are not vertigo. These are called “dizziness”, they are not related to vertigo and are usually seen in diseases that do not concern the ear.

Vertigo is not a name of a disease, but a symptom of a disease. Therefore, saying "I have vertigo" would not be a correct definition. Contrary to popular belief, vertigo can be seen not only in ear diseases, but also in neurological, internal, orthopedic and some eye diseases. Most of the diseases that cause vertigo are troubling but relatively insignificant. However, it is important to distinguish whether the event is a symptom of a serious disease in a vertigo attack (sudden hearing loss, tumoral events, brain hemorrhages, etc.). Therefore, clinical history and physical examination findings from the patient are very important.

Although many diagnostic methods are used in the diagnosis of vertigo, VNG (Videonystagmography) and VHIT (Video Head Impulse Test), which are very popular in recent years and used in our clinic, provide very useful information.

With VNG, involuntary eye movements called “nystagmus” that occur during dizziness are detected, and with VHIT, the functions of the balance organs in the inner ear are evaluated.

The most common causes of vertigo in ENT practice is BPPV (benign, attacks of dizziness that occurs with head movements), which is popularly known as "Crystal Disease". It occurs due to the uncontrolled movement of particles that are normally in the inner ear fluid where they should not be. To decide which "returning the crystals" movements (maneuvers) that we use in the diagnosis of this disease and also in the treatment will be is possible by determining the type, direction and speed of the eye movements that occur as a result of some diagnostic movement tests. This is where the VNG and VHIT tests come into play. Using these tests, we decide whether the disease is related to the ear, if it is related to the ear, whether the balance nerve or other balance organs are defective, if there is BPPV, which ear and which channel is faulty and what maneuver we need to do to correct it.

Galleria ENT Council: In the Private Galleria ENT Center, interesting, rare and curative cases are discussed every thursday between 12:00 and 14:00 with the participation of all academics and specialists. In these meetings, examination and radiological images of the cases, operation findings, pathology results are discussed together and their treatment is decided in the form of Galleria ENT Council Decision.
In 2011, an interactive scientific program on “Current treatment approaches in upper respiratory tract infections” for 6 weeks was prepared for Family Physicians.
In March 2012, the "Live surgical Rhinoplasty" course was organized for ENT specialists. Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Ear Nose and Throat Prof. Dr. Taşkın Yücel and Prof. Dr. Barlas Aydoğan from our center performed closed and open septorhinoplasty operations in 2 cases during the full-day course. The meeting, attended by approximately 45 ENT specialists, was held interactively.
The first meeting of the Turkish Ear Nose and Throat Foundation Çukurova Branch of 2023 was held on the evening of January 29 at the Private Galleria Ear Nose and Throat Center.
